Motor Vehicle Workshops Must Have Licence To Operate

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- More than 30,000 motor vehicle workshops in the country including service centres, tyre and accessories shops will be required to have a licence to operate when laws regarding maintenance and repair services of vehicles are enforced.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Bill, will be tabled in Parliament this March to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers besides ensuring the industry continues to thrive.

He said more than 30,000 workshops would be granted licences to operate after fulfilling the requirements set by the ministry according to the categories of services provided.

"The workshop also needs to have enough qualified mechanics to obtain a licence according to their service category.

"There are workshops that provide the full service, then there are those providing services such as knocking out dents on the vehicle and painting only. This category will be decided later," he said at a press conference after the townhall session with industry players and other stakeholders regarding the bill, here today.

Hamzah said the bill was drafted following numerous complaints received by the ministry from consumers on their dissatisfaction with the services provided by motor vehicle workshops.
