Wholesale, Retail Trade Sales Value Rises To RM97.7 Bln In Nov 2017

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's wholesale and retail trade sales value rose by nine per cent to RM97.7 billion in November 2017 as compared to the corresponding period in 2016.

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said, the sales value consisted of wholesale trade (RM47.7 billion), retail trade (RM38.1 billion) and motor vehicles (RM12 billion) businesses.

The positive growth was contributed by the retail trade and wholesale trade businesses which rose by 10.5 per cent and 9.6 per cent respectively, it said in its 'Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, November 2017' released here today.

"Volume index of wholesale and retail trade improved by 7.3 per cent to 158.8 points in November 2017 as compared to November 2016, supported by the increase in retail trade (8.4 per cent) and wholesale trade (eight per cent)," it said.

The Statistics Department said the seasonally-adjusted volume index of wholesale and retail trade increased by 0.4 per cent as compared to the preceding month.

Meanwhile, the volume index of wholesale trade grew by eight per cent to 169.1 points in November 2017 as compared to November 2016, it said.

It said month-on-month basis, this volume index (seasonally-adjusted) however, recorded negative growth of 0.9 per cent as against the previous month.

"The sales value of wholesale trade business registered 9.6 per cent growth to RM47.7 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. However, month-on-month (m-on-m) basis, this business registered negative growth 1.4 per cent,' it said.

The department said that for the retail business, volume index rose 8.4 per cent to 162.0 points in November 2017, while the seasonally-adjusted volume index of retail trade increased by 1.1 per cent compared with October 2017.

"The retail trade business recorded an increase in sales value to RM38.1 billion, or 10.5 per cent, as compared to last year while m-on-m, the sales value of this business increased 0.8 per cent," it said.

Meanwhile, it said, the volume index of motor vehicles recorded positive growth of one per cent to 124.5 points in November 2017 while the seasonally-adjusted volume index rose by 2.4 per cent in November 2017 as against October 2017.
