High-tech Library Services Must Be Expanded Nationwide - PNM DG

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The high-technology library services must be expanded throughout the country, especially in remote areas to ensure all residents have access to the same information thus generating a knowledgeable and informed society, said National Library of Malaysia (PNM) Director-General Datuk Nafisah Ahmad.

She said with today's development in information technology such as internet-enabled facilities, smartphones and smart gadgets, reading could be done anywhere and at anytime.

"The need for electronic reading materials such as e-books, e-journals and e-magazines has encouraged libraries throughout the country to digitise reading materials to promote the reading culture amongst people in the country.

"In line with the availability of digital reading facilities, 24.34 million information and communications technology service usage has been recorded in libraries nationwide throughout 2015,"she said when met by reporters after the opening of One Malaysia Library Conference at the Farmers' Organisation Tower, today.

Nafisah called on librarians and libraries nationwide to mobilise efforts on enhancing libraries and to make this as a national agenda to foster reading and create a knowledgeable and informed society.

She also emphasised that the development of libraries in the country should be in line with the development of various other sectors such as the economy in achieving the aspiration of 2050 National Transformation (TN50).
